Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator

General Description
BFN’s Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator (VOC) is responsible for recruiting volunteers, organizing volunteer tasks, and creating a positive experience for all who donate their time to BFN. The VOC manages a database of volunteer information and skills, matches volunteers to opportunities, keeps them informed, and conveys the organization’s mission.
In addition, the VOC will work with the Development and Communications Manager (DCM) and Executive Director (ED) to support communications and development activities.

Responsibilities

Volunteer Management (50%)

  • Recruiting and screening volunteers for appropriate opportunities that suit their interests
  • Orienting, training, and supervising new volunteers both on- and off-site
  • Ensuring Berkeley Food Network’s mission is conveyed to all who participate
  • Maintaining a safe, welcoming, and positive environment
  • When necessary, conducting difficult conversations with or terminating volunteers who do not follow BFN conduct protocols
  • Communicating with staff about volunteer and programmatic updates 
  • Implementing a volunteer appreciation program 

Volunteer Communications & Data Management (20%)

  • Keeping new and existing volunteers informed about BFN volunteer opportunities and any other relevant information
  • Responding to daily cancellations, inquiries, questions, and feedback through email, phone, and in-person communications
  • Collecting volunteer information about schedules, volunteer availability and skills, and maintain an up-to-date database in Salesforce
  • Completing periodical data analysis of volunteer records to track program success 

Outreach & Communications (30%)

  • In collaboration with DCM & ED, helping with the creation and collection of content for external communications
  • Supporting advancement team in the collection and maintenance of donor data in CRM database
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with the local business community for volunteer events and development opportunities
  • Maintaining, updating, and developing social media content in collaboration with the internal social media team
  • Coordinating with development team, as needed, for fundraising events and programming  
  • Participating in the development and implementation of an integrated strategic communications plan to advance brand identity, broadening awareness of BFN’s programs, and increasing visibility across key stakeholder audiences  
    • Email communications programs, including quarterly e-newsletters, campaign messages, and fundraising appeals
    • BFN’s website maintenance

Required Proficiencies

  • Experience in volunteer recruitment and management or in hiring and managing employees, including terminating volunteers or employees.
  • Working knowledge of databases (preferably Salesforce).
  • Excellent organization and team-building skills.
  • Good reporting, technical, and statistical skills.
