Senior Development Manager

The Development & Communications Coordinator will support our fundraising, grant, communications, BFN is hiring a Senior Development Manager to help support BFN’s mission of using innovative, community-centric solutions to create a more resilient, sustainable, and equitable food system. Berkeley Food Network is the largest direct food assistance organization in Alameda County, serving thousands of community members each week, and is looking to grow our development program to meet the needs of the community. The Senior Development Manager will work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors Development Committee to create, implement, and manage the fundraising goals of the organization. 


The Senior Development Manager is a skilled fundraiser and excellent project manager responsible for maintaining and overseeing the crucial pipelines of incoming funds as well as outgoing communications for the organization. They will be responsible for BFN’s individual giving program, including annual campaigns, monthly giving program, and donor stewardship. The Senior Development Manager will oversee the Advancement Team and support corporate and business relations, group volunteers, and events. As a small but growing organization, the Senior Development Manager is expected to bring a strong sense of responsibility, a willingness to support the team when needed, and a commitment to addressing food insecurity.

Hours: Full-time, exempt, salaried (40 hours per week)
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm
Location: Onsite at our West Berkeley warehouse, with the possibility of one-two days per week of remote work.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Giving Programs 60%
Individual Giving & Annual Campaigns:
-Manage and grow Individual Giving program by understanding donor base and supporters, managing spring and fall annual campaigns, and identifying new ways to prospect, cultivate, and steward donors
-Collect and analyze giving data by managing Salesforce CRM and ensuring accurate, timely recognition of gifts
-Oversee the creation, distribution, and feedback of all outreach materials for solicitation and stewardship of individual donors including impact reports, annual reports, appeal letters, and other solicitation materials as needed
-Work closely with the Executive Director on creating, implementing, and managing annual strategic development and fundraising plan, including establishing an annual theme, planning and executing outreach to donors
-Work with Board of Directors Development Committee to gather input, identify novel ways to raise funds for Berkeley Food Network, assign fundraising goals, and professionalize development program
-Identify tools to streamline, advance, and improve the efficiency of the development program
Manage portfolio of donors to cultivate toward higher giving levels 

Monthly Giving
-Create a Monthly Giving Circle program for new and existing monthly donors to increase donor engagement and stewardship
-Lead the development of bi-annual Impact Reports as donor stewardship newsletters


Marketing & Communications 25%
-Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance brand identity, broaden awareness of BFN’s programs, and increase visibility across key stakeholder audiences via social media, quarterly newsletters, and campaign messaging.
-Work with external consultants to maintain the website, including the integrity of website content, structure, and regular website updates.
-Oversee production and preparation of photography and other media for publication and maintain digital media library social media, website and digital marketing.
Serving as primary media contact and field media inquiries as necessary.


Advancement 10%
-Work with Executive Director to create strategy of corporate outreach, support, and sponsorship using existing or new collateral
-In collaboration with Volunteer & Outreach Manager, plan and coordinate events that include: group volunteer opportunities for businesses and organizations, annual Spring Supporter Appreciation event, and the annual Fall Open House event
-Work with Executive Director on the Grants Programs through prospecting, writing, submission, and reporting of grants
-Supervise & lead Advancement Team

Organizational Support 10%
-Create a positive work culture with Advancement Team with empathy, fun, and supportive leadership
-Use Community Cultivation budget to create relationships with prospective and existing donors
-Support the development of Strategic Planning process with a focus on advancement and fundraising
-Support other tasks as needed based on organizational demands
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
Required Qualifications
-Firm understanding of nonprofit finances and fundraising practices, including writing effective donor solicitations, annual campaign management, and donor cultivation
-Excellent project management skills, with a strong emphasis on producing quality results on time with a high attention to detail
-Ability to lead and collaborate with multiple groups of diverse skill sets on various projects
Familiarity and comfort with Salesforce, MS Office, Google Suite, WordPress or Squarespace, and MailChimp
-Ability to research and implement new technologies and platforms to advance development
-Superior communication skills with ability to convey complex information simply, effectively, and elegantly
-Prior work experience in nonprofit with elevated responsibilities including budget management, supervisory experience, and leadership
-Current California driver’s license with an insurable driving record and access to reliable transportation to attend meetings

Preferred Qualifications
-Understanding of the systemic and root causes of food insecurity
-Experience in grant research, prospecting, writing LOIs, and managing grant reporting timelines
-Formal college-level education and/or certification in business management, nonprofit management, marketing, fundraising, and/or communications

Physical Requirements
This position is primarily located at our West Berkeley offices with the ability to work one day a week remotely. Candidate must be able to perform the following duties with or without accommodation:

-Traverse the warehouse floor frequently throughout the day to execute duties.
-Stand/sit for the duration of the scheduled shift.
-Able to operate computer and mobile devices.
-Mobility to respond to moving vehicles, equipment, and loud noises/sounds typical in a warehouse setting.
-Sit at a desk, conference room or workstation for more than three (3) hours at a time.
-Travel to local events for meetings with external stakeholders.
-Communicate in clear speaking voice in person, before large audiences and over audio or video-based communications applications (e.g. phone, Zoom)
Compensation & Benefits
The compensation for this position is $96,500 annualized.

-Twenty-one (21) paid holidays, including annual closures the week of Fourth of July and between December 23 – January 1
-Accrued paid leaves including up to ten (10) vacation days and up to 80 paid sick leave hours in your first year, depending on the number of hours worked, and a paid day off for your birthday
