Development & Communications Coordinator

The Development & Communications Coordinator will support our fundraising, grant, communications, and event planning efforts. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, have experience with donor management systems (CRMs), and possess strong organizational and communication skills. This position reports to the Development & Communications Manager and requires a proactive individual who can handle multiple tasks efficiently.

Hours: Part-time 20 hours/week. Non-Exempt/Hourly.
Schedule: Mon-Thurs, a flexible schedule to be arranged with the Supervisor.
Location: Onsite at our West Berkeley warehouse, with the possibility of one day/week of remote work.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Individual Giving Program 50%

Donor Data Entry and Reporting:
-Manage donor profiles in Salesforce ensuring accurate and up-to-date information.
-Enter and acknowledge gifts and input solicitation and stewardship efforts.
-Generate reports to assist in tracking donor activities and fundraising progress.
-Implement changes and modifications to donor management processes as directed by the Development & Communications Manager.

Annual Fund Campaign Support
-Support the execution and planning of our two annual fund campaigns–Spring and Fall–by preparing donor lists, executing mail merge processes, and assisting with social media content creation.
-Coordinate the printing and processing of annual fund mailings, working with volunteers to ensure accurate and timely letter processing.


Grant Support 10%

Grant Research & Assistance
-Assist in prospect research for new grant opportunities.
-Maintain grant calendars and ensure timely submissions for grant webinars, Letters of Intent, and grant applications.
-Maintain updated grantor portfolios, accounts, and organization information for applications.
-Provide updated and timely information to non-profit ranking platforms Charity Navigator and Guidestar.


Marketing, Communications, & Public Relations 30%

-Using Canva, create visually appealing fliers, outreach materials, and social media graphics.
-Assist with updates to the Berkeley Food Network website content.
-Partner with the Development & Communications Manager to develop social media strategy and content to engage a variety of stakeholders.
-Support generation of quarterly newsletter templates and annual Impact Report.

Events & Outreach 10%

-Conduct outreach to local businesses and organizations to secure event sponsorships for food, door prizes, and other event items.
-Support the Development & Communications Manager and Volunteer & Outreach Manager with planning and logistics for events and community event tabling.
Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities.

Required Qualifications
-1-2 years experience in fundraising, communications, or marketing.
-Familiarity with best practices in social media content creation, including Reels.
-Proficiency in Canva or similar design tools.
-Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
-Experience with Salesforce or other donor management systems (CRMs) is strongly preferred.
-Experience working at a volunteer-oriented nonprofit or similar community organization.
-Some knowledge of food systems, public health issues, and the many structural injustices, inequalities, and histories causing hunger and/or poverty.

Physical Requirements
This position is primarily located at our West Berkeley offices with the ability to work one day a week remotely. Candidate must be able to perform the following duties with or without accommodation:

-Sit at a desk, conference room, or workstation for more than three (3) hours at a time;
-Traverse the distance of the facility in performance of duties.
-Ability to perform repetitive and sometimes tedious tasks such as data entry with accuracy.
Compensation & Benefits
The compensation for this position is $27/hour. The benefits for part-time employees at BFN are as follows:

-Twenty-one (21) paid holidays, including the end-of-year closure between December 23 – January 1 annually, and a paid day off for your birthday.
-Accrued paid leaves including up to ten (10) vacation days and up to 80 paid sick leave hours in your first year, depending on the number of hours worked.
-Elective participation in 403(b) Retirement Plan
