Mobile Pantry Program:

Our mobile pantries are located throughout Berkeley and run in partnership with amazing community organizations. They are fast-paced and a lot of fun. The people we serve are lovely and interesting – and very appreciative. Our volunteers really value having the opportunity to get to know them.

Time commitment: 2-3 hour shifts on a weekly, twice-monthly or monthly basis.

Available times: Various

Tasks:
Some combination of the following:

  • Help load food into our van at the BFN warehouse.
  • For those who are comfortable driving our van, deliver food to our mobile pantry location.
  • Work with partner agency staff to set up and run distribution.
  • Greet pantry visitors and help them with sign-in and food selection.
  • Pack up “leftovers” and return them to the BFN warehouse.

Requirements:

  • Able to lift 40 pounds
  • Able to treat pantry visitors respectfully.

Desired skills:

  • We are especially in need of volunteers who are comfortable driving our Ford Transit 250 van, which, by the way, drives like a dream.

On-site Pantry:

Our on-site pantry is open long hours and is relatively quiet. Our pantry visitors are friendly folks who are mostly from the neighborhood and come by regularly. This is a great opportunity for those who want to help out, but prefer something low-key and peaceful. Volunteers will have a fair amount of downtime to read, work on their computers, do homework, or even knit! You will be supported by BFN staff, who are a friendly lot, open to the occasional chat.

Time Commitment: 2-hour shifts on a weekly basis.

Available times: Monday – Thursday between 9 am and 5 pm.

Tasks: Volunteers greet and sign in pantry visitors, assist them with food selection (visitors select their own food), and keep the pantry stocked and tidy.

Requirements:

  • Able to lift 40 pounds
  • Able to treat pantry visitors respectfully.

Hub Kitchen:

Join our team of BFN Hub Kitchen volunteers and assist Chef Sarah in transforming fresh, donated ingredients into delicious, nutritious, heat-and-eat entrees for community members in need. Just a little kitchen experience goes a long way! Learn practical food-preparation and cooking skills while supporting this essential hunger-relief effort.

Time commitment: 2-4 hours shifts on a weekly or twice-monthly basis.

Available times: Wednesdays and Fridays between 9 am and 1 pm.

Tasks:

  • Volunteers help to sort donated food
  • Prep and cook food
  • Portion, package, and label food
  • Assist with cleanup.

Requirements:

  • Hub Kitchen volunteers must be 15-years old.

Food Pick up:

BFN receives donations of food from local food businesses. If you want to be part of the solution to food waste, this is the job for you!

Time Commitment: 1-2 hour shifts on a weekly basis.

Available times: Opportunities vary throughout the week.

Tasks: Volunteers drive to the donor’s location, receive the food, and deliver to the BFN warehouse. At the warehouse, you will assist staff to unload, log in, and store donations. We are also looking for volunteers who are willing to be on call to help us with one-off donations.

Requirements:

  • Able to lift 40 pounds
  • Comfortable driving our Ford Transit 250 van, which, by the way, drives like a dream.

Food Delivery:

BFN provides other organizations in Berkeley with prepared food for their clients. These can be large group meals or individually packaged meals. We also deliver groceries to partner food-assistance organizations and you will be able to use our van for those deliveries if your vehicle is too small.

Time commitment: 1 hour shifts on a weekly basis.

Available times: Opportunities vary throughout the week.

Tasks: Volunteers will use their own clean vehicles to deliver prepared foods and groceries to some of our partner agencies in Berkeley on a weekly basis. The job requires loading and unloading into and from your vehicle and takes about 1 hour.

Requirements:

  • Have your own clean vehicle or are able to drive our Ford Transit 250 van.
  • Able to lift 20 pounds

Warehouse:

Work behind the scenes to help us to serve our clients. Our warehouse is the hub of the work we do and we could use some help keeping it in tip-top shape and the food flowing smoothly.

Time commitment: Flexible

Available times: Monday – Friday, flexible times

Tasks: Assist our warehouse staff in keeping our warehouse in good repair, clean, and orderly. Help manage the flow of food through the warehouse.

Requirements:

  • Able to lift 40 pounds

Time commitment: Flexible

Available times: At your convenience with occasional check-ins M-F anytime between 9 am and 5 pm.

Tasks: Admin, research, HR and other office help.
